Antisemitism Erodes Istanbul University's Legacy

Istanbul University has prided itself on being a haven for scholars regardless of their background. Its halls have echoed the intellectual pursuits of students and professors from all corners of the globe. Two shining examples are former Israeli presidents Ben-Gurion and Ben-Zvi, both alumni who went on to become prominent figures on the world stage.

Immigrant scientists not only contributed the culture, but they are also the founding fathers of modern medical education in Istanbul. One such example is Dr. Erich Frank, a brilliant physician who fled Nazi persecution in the 1930s. Dr. Frank's contributions to the modernization of the medical faculty were invaluable. Philip Schwartz, Siegfried Oberndorfer, Erich Frank and countless others immigrating to the faculty was one of the main factors that determined the success of the modernization period started by Ataturk. Their stories are testaments to the university's historical commitment to inclusivity and the pursuit of knowledge.

However, recent incidents, like the antisemitic display at a bookstore near campus, paint a disturbing picture. This blatant bigotry not only creates a hostile environment for students and faculty, but it also sends a message to potential collaborators from around the world. Imagine the stifled potential for groundbreaking research and the loss of innovative solutions when brilliant minds are ostracized. Joint research projects on pressing global issues – climate change, pandemics – were scuttled because of this intolerance.

The stakes are high. Istanbul University must take decisive action to combat this bigotry. Educational programs fostering tolerance and celebrating the cultures that have contributed to the university's history are essential. Open dialogues that challenge prejudice and foster understanding are crucial. University leadership must send a clear message that antisemitism will not be tolerated.

The legacy of Istanbul University deserves better. It has a long and proud history of being a bridge between cultures.
